Pebble Formation

An example of EVOLUTION IN PROGRESS

My background in printmaking leads me towards the practice of making multiple images, but I am excited by the idea that no two images are truly identical. Chance or mutation comes into play. The Artist can accept that the history of his action is recorded within the surface of the piece, or he can stop time and capture a moment.

If you do not rely on modern technology and digital recording, keeping one version of each stage of a works' development is a very challenging but rewarding way of working. It is a similar process to reduction printing. I began this piece by creating 5 images. I made them as alike as possible, given the fact that they were all created by hand with no tracing, photographic or printed element. One copy of the first stage was retained, and then further actions were carried out on the surface of the remaining 4 images. This process was repeated until five stages had been created. Evolution in progress. "Natura non facit saltum".
