Darwin knew that the lack of an explanation for heredity left a big gap in this theory of natural selection. Unfortunately, he was unaware of Mendel's work. Experiments which involved nearly 30,000 pea plants over 8 generations were ignored until long after both Mendel and Darwin were dead.
